The activities offered by PAL “provide opportunities for young people to expand their horizons and realize their full potential” (PAL website).
The person that I interviewed for the youth site visit was Mr. Luis Acevedo, who is the Assistant Director at the PAL Armory. He said the organization chose the target population because that is what the grant specifies. The PAL Armory serve 41 middle schools within the Manhattan area. Although they serve the Manhattan area, kids can enroll from anywhere. Besides the middle school, the PAL Armory also have an Evening Teen Center program.
The PAL Armory develop their programs by writing a work scope which must get approved by the program manager to ensure that they are providing all the necessary services. The purpose of reviewing the organization’s program is to ensure that funds are allocated properly and not …show more content…
The opportunity for police officers to work with youths could create a nurturing environment, where tensions are not high and positive relationships can be established. The PAL boxing program provide training for individuals wanting to learn the basics of boxing, train for physical fitness, or simply for fun. Participants in the boxing program may participate in local or regional tournaments such as Golden Gloves and Silver Gloves. The benefits of boxing can enhance cardiovascular health and improve total body strength. Dedicating a community center for PAL members can keep adolescents safe and off the streets. Community centers provide a safe place for young people to hang out, make new friends, and stay out of trouble.
Mr. Acevedo lives in the community and worked with past youth organizations that enabled him to gain valuable experience, when he was a counselor. During my site visit, I observed how respectful and engaging Mr. Acevedo was with all the members. Mr. Acevedo said that working with PAL as an Assistant Director has offer him the opportunity to give back to the same community, where he currently resides.
