The Sherman and Berk Minneapolis Domestic Violence experiment was an experiment that focused on the effects of arrest with an emphasis on domestic violence cases. During the experiment, police were given three methods to use in order to reduce domestic violence cases. These methods included arresting the individual who committed the crime, an attempt to counsel both parties involved, and sending the offender away from the victim in order to cool down. As a result, some problems arose from the experiment due to “prematurely and unduly publicizing” the results of the experiment labeled as a “slippage”.…
The main reason why i would like to work for Hutchins Police Department is because i wouldn't just be a badge number to my superiors and the citizens of Hutchins. It appeals to me because i would be able to form relationships with not only the citizens, buisness owners but also my collegues, which I would not have the opportunity to do if I worked in a large agency. Something else that interest me about Hutchins is the fact that I would receive the necessary training that I would need to become the best police officer I could be. I am extremely dedicated to anything I put my mind to, and I strive for excellence.…
What do I Know? The topic I chose to do the I-Search project is Police Brutality, what I know about it is a police officer will use unnecessary violence or force on a person with no reason. The reason why I chose police brutality is because ever since I was a little kid my dream was always to be a police officer so I can be able to help those around me and also to be able to protect Santa Rosa, not only that but know why and how the police officers are getting a bad reputation, I want to know why some of the police officers result to police brutality and give others a bad reputation and how they would deal with officer who caused the problem.…
Police are expected and even encouraged to use force when detaining or arresting criminals. Their job is to protect the community and keep everyone around them safe. There comes a time though, that the force they are using becomes far too much for what is needed to control the situation. In the recent case of Sandra Bland, an officer pulled Bland over for a minor traffic stop that eventually led to her incarceration. As the officer was pulling her out of her car she shouted that she had epilepsy and that he was about to break her wrist.…
Rodney King beating was a horrendous act that happened in Los Angeles, California, on March 3, 1991. It was an act that involved 15 police officers and King. And this incident was caught on camera by an amateur recorder, if it hadn’t been recorded by this civilian we may not have known the situation or outcome. Due to the video, it captured the police officers using excessive force on King for a high-speed chase. Excessive beating and kicking resulted in “11 skull fractures, a broken cheekbone, a fractured eye socket, a broken ankle, missing teeth, kidney damage, external burns, and permanent brain damage” (Kappeler, Sluder, and Alpert, 1994: 146).…
A state trooper, sometimes called highway patrol officers or a state police officer, is a law enforcement officer. Many people don’t know what a state trooper is or what they do. State troopers patrol highways enforcing traffic laws, provide emergency assistance when needed, and help prevent crime and arrest law offenders. The goal of a state trooper is to promote safety by enforcing the law.…
Yes, the officer needs to obtain a warrant to make an arrest. Law enforcement need to get arrest warrants before apprehending suspects inside of their homes or personal businesses. If it is needed, an additional officer can be presented on the outside the suspects home on keep them from trying to flee the scene while law enforcement try to acquire a warrant. Although, warrantless arrests in the home are legitimate in specific situations if urgent conditions exist that make it impossible for the law enforcement agencies to get a warrant.…
Police involved shootings is a widely controversial topic among America today. With the situation intensifying through the past couple years, assumptions are made surrounding the lawfulness of the occurrences. Many consider all these POIs to be unjust but little do they know of all the research and investigation that goes on behind the scenes of these shootings. The media revolves these stories around race and judgment though that is not always a variable in the case. It is no secret that there are flaws within our system but that only means there is room for improvement.…
The use of force is justified by police in order to compel compliance by an unwilling subject in order to make an arrest, or protect themselves or others from harm. The use of force escalates from officer presence requiring no force, basic verbal commands, Empty-Hand Control and physical restraint, and less than lethal methods with a last resort of lethal force. Every situation is different and every officer’s level of training and experience differs so the level of force an officer may use varies. An officer’s job is to control a situation in order to protect the community with the use of force used only when it is required to do so. As with any situation circumstances can change in seconds and could require a higher use of force at any time.…
These factors add more challenges for police to effectively respond to domestic violence. Police do not need to always arrest the batterer. It was found that most battering suspects discontinued their aggressive behavior even if they were not arrested by police (Miller, Hess, Orthmann, 2014, p. 437). This shows mandatory arrest policies for all batterers may be unnecessary and tie up a communities limited resources away from identifying the worst offenders and the victims at the greatest risk. By police simply responding to the situation and talking to the couple it has shown to reduce the subsequent aggression against the female.…
Stop and Frisk In the 1990s, New York City became the poster child for proactive policing tactics such as stop and frisk, and other cities like Los Angeles and Philadelphia followed soon after. Stop and frisk is one type of policing. It is where police officers are allowed to stop citizens in public areas under reasonable suspicion of crime behavior, make inquiries and if they feel threatened frisk for weapons. This police tactic was first put into use in the 1960s with the purpose of removing illegal guns from the streets.…
This paper is going to explain who can issue a search warrant, the grounds on why a search warrant will be issued, who issues it, and the people and location to be searched, and items that can be seized. I will also be informing you on who can issue a search and seizure warrant. I have attached a search and seizure warrant. The search and seizure falls under the Fourth Amendment. Let me begin with what a search warrant consists of.…
Racial Profiling — making judgement to a stranger partly or only based on one’s characteristics for example race, ethnicity and national origin. There are several definitions have shown up, but the main ideas are basically the same. Racial profiling exists from the years of slavery. According to the book White Power, Black Crime, and Racial Politics, which is written by Robert Staples, mentions that the court officials in Philadelphia gave permission for the police stopping any Negro who wander and walk on the street in 1963. (31)…
Officer discretion is the ability of officers to use logic and common sense. And, for those seeking assistance from the criminal justice system (CJS), mandatory arrest subordinates their rights and needs to that of the CJS. Advocates claim, with effectiveness that the criminal justice system has factual ignored the context, circumstances and various desires and needs of victims. Majority of states have accepted arrest policies that require police to either arrest one or both parties at the scene, or to just write a report justifying why an arrest is not made. Mandatory arrest policies are normally safer for the victim because if the abuser isn’t arrested, he or she will make the attack worse against the victim as a beating for contacting the…
