In Melissa Jeltsen’s article, “Cops get new Guidance on Responding to Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence,” she explains why new policies are being made for policemen to follow when investigating sexual assault crimes. New rules are being made in the police force that require more policies and training because many policemen are taking advantage of rape stereotypes. These new guidelines are making policemen investigate more thoroughly instead of just making assumptions. Many policemen were making bad judgement calls based off different rape stereotypes. Others were taking advantage of these stereotypes and were raping women. They could get away with this because many people in the police force chose to believe the stereotypes rather than the rape victims. In Candice Burnd’s article, “Police Departments Ignore Rampant Sexual Assault by Officers,” she explains how and why cops can get away with rape easier than the average person. Sex offenders are hard to prosecute, but policemen that sexually assault people are even harder to prosecute. It also makes me wonder how long this has been an issue. Personally, I have never had any kind of run-in with a police officer that would make me think negatively of them, or even thought of it as a problem. I want to believe that in the future these problems will be resolved, and that policemen won’t make assumptions based off stereotypes. I hope that in the future policemen will thoroughly investigate these crimes and that the truth will come out. Now all we can really do is take precaution and still have a realization that it is only a small number of cops who are taking advantage of these stereotypes. Policemen are only human and make unintentional mistakes just like every other person in this
