As a police administrator, I believe the implementation of a planning unit is beneficial as long as the unit is effective and just the right size. The planning unit is responsible for viable planning and research initiatives which are extremely important in times of increasing budget problems. They are in charge of consistently discovering and reporting on the best and most efficient practices in policing while preparing the background for new ideas and initiatives for the agency. The key is making sure the unit does not become too large where they are wasting resources rather than finding ways to optimize them.

While the budget and police department employees increased in the past years, the number of city staff per capita and budget allocation has actually decreased because of geographic growth. Law enforcement is in charge of the public’s safety. At 27.3% of the city’s total budget, and battling budget cuts, while the population continues to grow is only setting up law enforcement for failure. Having less officers per capita can result in officers being delayed or not respond at all to non-priority calls. Police forces are stretched thin and citizens lack traditional levels of service. This can also result in crime going unreported by victims.

Some ways to cut the cost of providing law enforcement services is not higher civilians for non-responder roles. Another way is to utilize interns or volunteers for clerical roles. Implementing volunteer watch groups also contributes to ensuring the public’s safety without having to spend additional resources.
7. Do you agree with allowing “advertising” on patrol vehicles as a way to raise
