Now that the 2016 Presidential Campaign has concluded, did mainstream media polarize the American people? The answer is a very obvious yes. When it comes to the topic of the media and politics, most of us will readily agree that mainstream media has significantly polarized our political perception. Overtime, mainstream media has become increasingly popular. The internet introduced us to a vast amount of political news articles and social networking websites. They always spur a sense of civic involvement and deepen the engagement with the political process. Emotional connections cause bonds to form. From personal experience, when a bond is formed with a person, it is extremely challenging to let it go. Candidates always use this simple fact to their advantage while campaigning for any form of political office. Candidates always represent themselves in a positive, uplifting manor. This is why I strongly believe that social media has, indeed polarized the American people. Even though a person might state one thing, their action may be entirely different. It is extremely important to use social media to learn about the candidates, but other sources as well. Do not strictly use social media when making the important decision of who to elect for political office. In addition to social media, watch the local news stations, read the reports, and make your decision carefully. In fact, social media is something that should always come as a second rate source compared to the much more credible news stations. Obtaining information from various sources is essential before making a final decision. Otherwise, Fallows claims that few people will pay attention to it. If an article is presented in a boring way, the credibility will lose its appeal ( Fallows)” In the same way, Hannah Holmes, author of “Red Brain Blue Brain” argues that, “Even if [information] is informative, if [it] is not presented in a creative way, it will be overlooked. (Holmes)” In conclusion then, as stated earlier, I strongly agree that the media has come about with the change of time. It has affected and changed the political realm drastically by creating issues with bias, credibility, and interpretation. However, nothing can be done about it. Therefore, the proper amount of research must be done. Voters cannot afford to believe everything
