The Polaris Project and Human Trafficking
Human trafficking is an international issue that encompasses cultural, social and economic issues. Human trafficking is a multi-billion dollar industry that denies freedom to ordinary people around the world (Polaris). The two most common types of human trafficking are labor and sex, with sex trafficking being the most popular. Sex trafficking can occur in the forms of prostitution, child pornography, coercive sex and/or sex escorts (Polaris).

In the article by Naswa, “adolescent HIV/AIDS is a separate epidemic that needs to be handled and managed separately from adult HIV.” From the number of cases reported to the NHTRC, 31 percent of the victims reported in 2013 were of adolescent age (Statistical Overview). There is no official estimate for the total number of victims that go unreported, but it is thought that 100,000 children are in the sex trade in the United States each year (Polaris). For adolescents that have escaped or survived sex trafficking, it is essential for them to seek proper testing and treatment, especially if HIV or AIDS was contracted during their time as a slave.
Culture and social construction of sexuality and reproductive health is evident in the Polaris Project as well. Pop culture often regards to human trafficking as young girls and the porn industry. This is taught through books, magazines, advertisements and television shows, such as Law and Order: SVU, where the victim of a sexual offense is typically a female, under 30 years of age that was kidnapped or ran away. Human trafficking is a problem at the national level in regards to the economy and organized crime. According to an article published in the Romanian journal, Acta Universitatis Danubius, “human trafficking may create vulnerability to economic and social stability of the states, even for their peace and security, by disturbing the demographic, ethnic, cultural balance.”
Geographical position can have an effect on human trafficking as well. Cities that are surrounded by water or border another country have a significant impact on human trafficking due to the ease of access and escaping (Economic). Poverty and socio-economic status also attract traffickers due to the vulnerability and the victim’s need for work (Economic).
Without non-profit organizations such as the Polaris Project, victims of human trafficking would not have a place to reach out to for help. The Polaris Project is unique from other anti-human trafficking organizations due to its global hotlines program operating from the NHTRC (Polaris).
