We’ve been hearing about it for years, “The polar bears are going to go extinct because of global warming!” But is it really true, or is it just a clever marketing ploy utilized by environmental corporations? For decades the apparent phenomena of the planet warming has been a major global story. Vehicles are being made to be more “energy efficient”, companies are getting fined for harming the environment, and the majority of people recycle. But yet, the media presence of global warming advocates is stronger than ever, leading some to believe that maybe it’s all one big fairy tale. Since 1981, the average sea ice extent in the northern hemisphere has dropped by almost 500,000 square kilometers. This data directly correlates with the count of the region’s polar bear populations, which have also steadily decreased for the last thirty years. Due to warmer temperatures, the ice is melting sooner in the spring, and not freezing until late in the autumn months. The diet of polar bears mainly consists of seals, and the hunt these seals they need the ice to reach ocean depths that aren’t obtainable from the shore.
