The “Polar Bears and Fishes” game is an excellent example of the scientific method. The first step is “Ask a Question.” There are two sets of five dice with their own respective sets of data. There is a poem that accompanies the sets. The question is, how do the dice relate the poem? The second step is “Do Background Research.” To research, I re-read the poem. The poem states that polar bears sit around an icy hole. The only numbers on a die with a “hole” in the middle are a three and a five. Step three is “Construct a Hypothesis.” We tried multiple hypotheses, but they didn't work. Finally we stumbled onto the idea that if we counted the number of dots around the threes and the fives, those would be the bears. If we then flipped those dice
