The polar bear is part of the Ursidae family and it’s scientific name is, Ursus Maritimus. It’s physical characteristics are that it is white, six to nine feet and 800 to 1,300 pounds. It feeds upon seals and fish for nutrients. The polar bear population is decreasing drastically because of global warming and is at an all time low of about 22,000. Even though they live most of their lives in the water, their home is on the ice nursing and taking care of their cubs. They were marked as threatened species under the Endangered Species Act in May 2008 because researchers have observed and recorded that of the 19 subpopulations; three are declining, six are stable, one is increasing, and the remaining nine, we have no data on.The population that …show more content…
Carbon footprint is the total amount of carbon dioxide produced in one lifetime of a certain technology. For example, the carbon footprint of a single 100 watt light bulb is one pound of coal running for 10 hours. If we change out life styles to that of Russia’s then we would have a low carbon footprint and still keep the polar bears. Russia receives 75% of their electricity from nuclear energy and the rest 15% from hydro power. These solutions are extremely efficient, but yes, they are dangerous to the environment. Using solar and wind power are great and extremely efficient solutions, but have limited availability because of how unpredictable they are. Wind speeds are never at a constant speed but vary each and every time and solar panels aren’t sensitive enough to recharge fast enough for the sun to charge it, but both give free renewable energy. The best and most efficient way to lower carbon dioxide levels would be to switch from gasoline powered cars to electric or hybrid cars.Battery electric vehicles or BEV run on battery power instead of gasoline which makes them have zero emission. The founder of Tesla, Elon Musk, has created the Model S that runs completely on battery power that cover a range of about 300 miles per charge. Another option would be plugin hybrid electric vehicles or PHEV because the gasoline in the car isn’t used when the car is taking off from a red light until the drivers reaches 15 miles per hour. The gasoline in the car also recharges the battery, so you won’t need charging stations that Tesla would require you to use. For example, “if every gallon of gasoline contains 20 pounds or 9 kilograms of carbon dioxide, then a hybrid car will emit 51.6 pounds or 23.1 kilograms of carbon dioxide every 100 miles or 161 kilometers, while a conventional car will emit 74.9 pounds or 34 kilograms(howstuffworks).” A single

As the global concern for the environment increases with time, the desire to use cars decreases. People are aware that cars release fumes which, when combined, can be detrimental for the environment, and they want to do something about it. Elisabeth Rosenthal writes in her New York Times article, “In German Suburb, Life Goes on Without Cars”, that up to fifty percent of environmental greenhouse gas pollution comes from the cars driven in American suburbs. In her article, she quotes David Goldberg, an official of Transportation for America, that “All of our [the U.S.A.’s] development since World War II has been centered on the car, and that will have to change”. It seems like America, and the rest of the world, is becoming more aware about what…
