During his years he rose to power as a leader for the Khmer Rouge, one of Cambodia’s Communist Regimes, which during 1975 took over the country. During his time in power and during the Khmer Rouge reign, he oversaw deaths of around one to two million people from starvation, overwork or execution. Pol Pot was a leader that had negative effects on his people and country. Pol Pot was born into a farm life type of family in a small village called Prek Sbauv. In their village in Prek Sbauv his family and he owned around fifty acres of rice patty which is ten times the national average. During his time going to school in France Pot got involved and joined communist circles. In 1953 he ended up losing his scholarship in Paris and decided to go back home to Cambodia intending on building and starting a revolution there. When he was being schooled in Paris he enjoyed the ways of the groups of communist parties that he was par taking in. When he went back to Cambodia to start a revolution he started out small. In 1962, he became his party’s secretary general. During being secretary general he had a fear of being arrested so Pot fled Phnom Penh. During his hiding in 1970 the leader of Cambodia was overthrown of his power and replaced by a new leader by the name of Lon Nol, who had support from the U.S. After the civil war that took place and including the bombing from the U.S. trying to prevent communist leaders from going in to control, later that spring of 1975 the Khmer Rouge army took control of Phnom Penh.
