This invasion led to an all out war. July 8, 1982, Saddam Hussein visited the town of Dujail. There a group of Dawa militants attempted to assassinate Saddam. In retaliation the whole town was punished. 1,500 men, women, and children were wounded up and put in prison and the entire town was destroyed. February 23 to September 6, 1988, Saddam Hussein started the Anfal Campaign. The purpose of it was to eliminate the large population of Kurdish or as many would consider it, genocide. 182,000 Kurds died from being shot while some died from chemical weapons. The Persian Gulf War that Saddam Hussein caused created a huge environmental disaster by releasing 10 million barrels of oil into the Gulf.
