Unless you’ve been living under a Graveler for the past month, the hottest new app craze across the world is Pokemon GO! An augmented reality game that places users in the hotseat as an aspiring trainer, tasked with the age-old mission of “catching ‘em all”. The biggest change in this game from entries in the traditional Pokemon series is that trainers have to venture out into the real world and use the augmented reality software and gps on their smartphones in order to find pokemon in the real world.

A dream come true for both hardcore and casual fans of the series, Pokemon GO instantly became the most downloaded app in history. The idea behind Pokemon Go was originally an April Fool’s Day prank conceived by Satoru Iwata of Nintendo collaborating with Google. When Tsunekazu Ishihara took notice of Niantic’s augmented reality game Ingress, he felt that it would be a perfect for the concept of Pokemon GO. The game even uses crowdsourced data from Ingress for in-game content such as pokestops and gyms.

The servers have since been expanded and now play host to millions of unique users a day.
