Pointe Shoes

Every dancer dreams of starting the one and only class that everybody knows is so famous. What is this beautiful class? It is Pointe, the gorgeous, little, squared-toed, baby-pink slippers that so many dancers strive to wear. Who wouldn’t want to dance on a three-inch surface supporting three times her own body weight? Beauty is pain and the beauty of your feet after you’re done and the pain-staking hours it takes to break in the shoes is so worth it. The most crucial step in taking this class is getting your pointe shoes. Make sure they are the smallest pair in the store. They will stay on ten times better. If the shoe hurts when it is put on, it is the right size. There is no way of making a pointe shoe comfortable. The shoe will not be broken in either so the sole will be really hard and flat. While at the store make sure when the shoe fitter comes that you pretend you know what you are talking about. The more clueless you act the more expensive shoe they are going to try and sell. Always make sure the person fitting the shoes suggests a pad for the inside of the shoe, otherwise you’ll kill your feet even more than they already will be taking the class. It’s where you will learn all your technique and be the place where your legs will strain to make it through the reps and reps of plies that are done. Nobody starts out in pointe shoes either, so it’ll take a month or so or longer before your dance teacher thinks you are ready to go en pointe. The entire time leading up to this, you will be on demi pointe, which is where the ball of the foot is still on the floor but in releve. (29) When reading that, my mind automatically goes to how it provides a network or forum for artist interaction. During our technique class, we typically perform a phrase and then discuss things about the phrase and breaking it apart. Personally, this helps a lot for me because after learning it for the first time I like to perform it once to make sure I have the choreography down pat before we go back as a class and break down the little technique things and ideas that I didn’t have before. My body and mind are constantly going in different directions making sure I have this and making sure that my technique is correct. Not only does this affect my dance, but it happens to me through everyday life of “what is due next”, “what time do I have to be there”, “when does it start”,…

The purpose of this project is to show that Misty Copeland is changing the way the ballet world defines the correct image and body shape of a ballerina. Copeland does not fit the stereotype of ballerina: she is 5’2, has really defined muscles, has bust, and is African American. She started ballet at the age of 13, late for a dancer, but her pure talent made her into a prodigy. Misty Copeland really set out to become a professional ballerina, regardless of her ethnicity and body shape, she pushed through the obstacles that were set in front of her because she did not have the correct body shape and was not white. She is part of the American Ballet Theater (ABT) and is renowned because she is one of their first African American soloist, and is…

From the age of three, I loved ballet more than any of the other styles of dance or other extracurricular activities. I remember being backstage for dance recitals and looking up at the “big girls” with their beautiful pointe shoes. They would stand all the way on the tips of their toes and twirl around so easily. For years I would watch, mesmerized, dreaming of being a real ballerina and wearing my own pointe shoes. As my technique improved, my love of ballet grew.…

It all began in middle school, a place for evolving, happy-go-lucky students like me. Inside of my particular school district, there was a peculiar love for high-end sports footwear. Having the best looking sneakers was every kid’s ambition, and it even sparked the yearning inside of me as well. I bought my first sneakers, the Air Jordan Five, with the cash I earned from chores and all those strenuous cuts from my daily lunch money. As I wore my shoes, people began to notice that I too owned flashy kicks.…
