Unlike other shoes, the ballerina who buys the pair of pointe shoes has to get the elastics and ribbons sewn on herself. For a few new pointe dancers this means having an older sister, mother, grandmother, or anyone in their family who knows how to sew to do it for them. However, most ballerina’s will want to learn how to do sew for themselves so when they learn where they need the ribbons sewn on the shoe and if they even need an elastic around their ankle they don’t have to have the hassle of trying to explain to a parent or whomever is sewing for them what they need. Besides learning how to sew, the earning of a first pair of pointe shoes allows ballerinas to move forward in their training to newer and more complex steps and easily master old ones.
