When the men in the story was examining Grendel “it filled [him] with joy, though it was crazy, and before [he] knew [he] could do it, [he] laughed”(Gardner 26). This shows that Grendel is a joyful person just like any other human. When Grendel became fascinated with the world he was “sickened, if only at the waste of it all they killed cows, horses, men, so they left to rot or burn”(Gardner 36).In the literal sense this quote mean that Grendel has a soft heart towards the things in the world, and he is disgusted about what King Hrothgar and his men is doing. Beowulf stays true to his word and takes on the monster, bravely (and almost recklessly) casting aside man made objects to give Grendel a ‘fair’ fight. Beowulf also acts with honor and virtue. This characteristic is seen many times but is most notable when he fights Grendel in hand-to-hand combat; he argues that is would give him an unfair advantage against the beast and make the victory cheap and unworthy. The warrior’s code that he abides to is what makes him extend the same respect he would to any other foe to Grendel.…

What separates the epic poem Beowulf and John Gardner’s Grendel is how the devil-spawn Grendel, is presented. Gardner’s Grendel is a retelling of the story of Beowulf, through the monster’s eyes in depth. On the other hand, the epic poem introduces Grendel briefly, yet assertively. He is described as a terrible, evil being spawned by the devil and shunned by the most high.…

This fight is more difficult for Beowulf than the fight with Grendel, as Beowulf is angry and his cause to kill is not pure: “He scoured the dwelling in single-minded anger” (1572-3). Beowulf only wins the fight because God has given him a sword. Yet that sword is melted by Grendel’s mother’s blood, which might suggest how powerful vengeance can be: it can destroy the God’s gift and make a man alienate himself from God. Beowulf is open to the evil of vengeance, which makes him a flawed hero in the Christian…
