Poetry as defined by Oxford Dictionary is, “a literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; collectively or as a genre of literature.” Though defined across many other mediums, poetry can never truly be given a solidified definition. Writer and poet Dan Rifenburgh expressed this best through his piece, ‘What is Poetry?’. “We may feel we know what a thing is, but have trouble defining it. That holds as true for poetry as it does for, say, love or electricity.” The dramatic yet sometimes simplistic stringing together of words to paint mental images to the reader, the use of metaphors/figures of speech to convey meaning, the use of symbols to create depth, the purposeful pattern of sounds, the endless mixing of ideas, poetry is all of this to create a masterpiece of feeling; emotion that stems from the ink madly, sometimes insanely, written onto a page.
