Poetry Synthesis

The first question I considered before diving into the topic of poetry was simply; what is poetry? I never had expressed an interest in reading poetry, however I thought I had a pretty good estimation of what it was. After completing the required reading assignments on poetry, I concluded that the study of poetry is an area in which I required a further comprehensive investigation. Therefore in order to gain a better understanding of how to interpret the “Ars Poetica” (Art of Poetry), I had to go beyond the Norton text. I have always enjoyed reading, anything from Dickens to King, poetry however was always placed on the bottom of my literary priorities. Although the text provided a base line of theories and practices, I found it to be a little sporadic and somewhat incomplete. Therefore, I continued to search for a more definitive and structured source of knowledge. Considering the takeaways from the Norton text, focusing primarily on the importance of discovering the purpose of a poem and the methods an individual utilizes to define that purpose, I began to research the World Wide Web. Upon my first few attempts to acquire a template for analyzing poetry, I discovered that Vanier College published an article outlining a logically structured process. Simply defined, poetry is the possession of an imaginative or sensitively emotional style of expression; it is a literary work in which a special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by utilizing distinctive styles and rhythms. What I came to discover is that; basically a poem is only words, words that have been carefully selected to emotionally express an idea. While the complexities of poems differ between author and concept, the purpose remains the same. Poems essentially take the emotional perspectives of an author and convey them to audience, in turn providing readers with an alternative method to consider and or relate to an idea. As I worked through this assignment I must admit I have a new found respect for poetry, it’s craftsmanship, gracefulness and spirit are very admirable. While my study has been an arduous endeavor, I remain a novice in the art of poetry. Quite honestly I am currently struggling with an absence of certainty that my interpretations of the more complex poems are correct, a present inconvenience that all students of the art must endure. Rest assured, I am confident that the future will hold many other opportunities to expand my knowledge of the art, for now I am content with the fact that I have learned a signification deal on the subject and uncovered an additional leisure pursuit.
