Poetry Response Essay

This poetry excerpt is about how we can question how we spend our time and whether or not what we did with it is something worth remembering, and it’s also about hoping that we can make an impact on the world (as seen in the image of “[shattering] hourglasses” and “[taking] photographs]”, and the third line). The tone of the excerpt isn’t exactly formal, as it seems to be a personal truth shared between the author/speaker and the reader/audience (as seen in the usage of pronouns like “I”, “We”, and “Our”); and I think the theme of this excerpt is “Everyone worries about the future and what will become of what they’ve done with their time”. My art work shows a person’s shadow with the words “I was here” because I wanted to focus on the last line as I feel like many people think about this a lot, and I think that this thought constantly comes and goes and can appear and disappear, like a shadow.

The poem begins with a direct speech from the speaker establishing one specific day in time where one has an epiphany of what one’s purpose in life is. In the three next lines, a symbol is introduced as the “voices”. The “voices” represent other people, mainly those who are part of one’s life but are not beneficial to one’s personal growth. These three lines reveal the true intentions of those voices as they keep saying the wrong things and shifting one’s mind in a different direction. The next four lines utilizes metaphors to emphasize one’s perseverance.…

Good morning/afternoon Mrs Vassilieff and fellow peers. In this short presentation I will be presenting three original poems concerning the social issue of racism. In the modern world racism is becoming more and more destructive. It disempowers people and destroys the cohesion in the community. When examining modern music and poetry, there is a common theme between the two especially when adding in the element of protest poetry. Artists such as Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar more recently pushing for change and calling awareness to the issues surrounding their communities, very closely relates to the protest poetry written in the 20th century. They both have the same agenda and address the same issues even though the way and tone in which it’s delivered differs from one another. Poets Claude McKay , Margaret Walker and maya Angelou use their position as a writer to speak on issues with the system but not as bluntly because of the time period and censorship.…

What is poetry? To your average person, they would say it is just a small group of sentences where each end of the line rhythms with the last. For the more educated, but not as influenced by it, poetry is a written or vocal passage that follows a set of rules controlling things such as the number of syllables for each lines. However, for those who have been bless with the touch of the Muses and claim the title of an artist, they poetry is an art form that represents what is not of mortal thought and has ties with spiritual origins. The question that now remain is of what form should poetry take.…

Modernist Poets Discuss the Impermanence of Glory In the period following World War I, citizens of all nationalities faced a dark disillusionment forcing them to grapple with personal identity and the purpose of life. People looked to artists of the age as builders of morale and shapers of societal perspective, yet the writers of that time had little more sense of direction than anyone else in the midst of ideological desolation. The only thing to be certain of was uncertainty. Two Modernist poets – Thomas Hardy, and A. E. Housman – chose to cope with such insecurity by depicting Glory meeting an undefeatable adversary and returning to obscurity; using allusions, imagery and tone to set a mood of either negativity or cheerful acceptance, each…

Wisdom encompasses all reality, so it is difficult to say that wisdom is found in any particular historical events, cultures or religions or in any ancient civilizations. However, the encounter with wisdom of the community of Israel can be traced in the written corpus which includes the Torah and the prophetic writings. Even so, some scholars studying the wisdom literature have the opinion or caution that, as wisdom is fundamentally related with creation and is available in every aspect of creation, one cannot limit wisdom to one people or one historical process. Creation is the locus for the wisdom literature because it reflects and develops the idea that human beings are created in the image and likeness of God (Gen 1, 27). In this literature, human beings are the part of a whole…
