He or she can notice any special effects in the poem, if any words rhyme, detect any rhetorical devices such as repetition and onomatopoeias, and many more minute details that might be overlooked when simply reading quietly to oneself. They can stress important words or phrases and emphasize any special terms. This almost erases the margarine of error when trying to figure out the tone of a poem. If more people listened to poetry, rather than simply reading it, it would create a better understanding of the true meaning. I can personally testify to this point. I attended a poetry reading not too long ago in which poets from the surrounding Milwaukee area gathered to share their work with the community. They shared their own personal works as well as pieces that they liked. When the author read his or her own work I noticed something unique. The author put the emotions they felt matched their works into the words as they read them. I found this to be absolutely beautiful. Their words were like tiny dancers that capered across the room as they flowed from the poet’s mouth to the audience’s ears. I felt a special connection between the poet and poem that I had not found when simply reading poetry. Listening to a poet read his or her own work is a unique experience that is almost indescribable. There is nothing quite like it.
