Memories can be declared as a form of language, literally and metaphorically, in a way to express how the holocaust affected Jakob, as a survivor. A universal way of expression that Michaels demonstrates is poetry and song. Michaels describes how poetry is a way of art that Jakob, Anthos, and Ben turn to in order to express their thoughts and pain, but also too reminiscent themselves of love and pleasure. Daphne stated to Jakob after being informed that he writes poetry, that Jakob has the ability to make people marry (Michaels 58).
