Poetry Analysis - I Carry Your Heart Essay
I have chosen a poem by E. E. Cummings that’s called “I Carry Your Heart”.
The reason why I have chosen this particular poem is because the first time I read it, I was completely absorbed by it. It described just how I feel about a special person. I love the way E. E. Cummings writes. The way he manages to come out with words in such a sweet and lovely way just makes me happy. This is the poem:
I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart) I am never without it (anywhere
I go you go, my dear, and whatever is done
By only me is your doing, my darling)
I fear no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) I want
No world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)

There are a few metaphors in this poem. For example: “I want No world (for beautiful you are my world, my true). The effect of this metaphor is that we really need to understand that this person means pretty much everything in the world.
The theme in this poem would I say was love, but I don’t think that this love is directed to a girlfriend or a boyfriend, but to a very good friend or a sister. And the reason why I think this is because in this summer, I read a book called “In your shoes”, and there is this dyslexic girl who learns to read, because she is practising with an old man at her work. He gets her to really listen to what this poem says, and she realizes then that the poem was not written for a girl or boyfriend, but a really good friend.
But I would also say this because of this: “Here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud, and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)”. I know that you also tell secrets to your boyfriend, but when you are talking about a secret, you just connect it with your best friend, because your best friend knows all of your secrets.
