'Poetic And Delicate Experience In Before The Storm'

As I first started reading "Before The Storm" I initially thought this story was going to be cut and dry. It started with two intoxicated people meeting in a bar. I pictured what you could probably see at any of your local bars. The author then began making references to comparing the encounter to a storm. It was then I started to get a poetic and deeper meaning to the story I was reading. The title then seemed very appropriate to me. Comparing a storm to an intoxicated experience can be very accurate. For some people drinking can be as destructive as a storm. As the two are leaving together the author makes point to mention the characters view as they leave, "When we burst out the doors, it surprised me to see the hurricane had passed; more so that not a drop of water lay in the street full of taxi drivers". That statement represented an acknowledgement that the world isn't a dreamland that they are in at the moment. …show more content…
I have also known many Marines I served with that entered this storm as a way to escape, have comfort, and even feed their addiction. The story turns to the couple going back to her house and have a sexual encounter. The way the author illustrates the scene is deep and made me sad. He illustrates the scene as the couple in a shelter from the storm. To some it may seem like just a couple having casual sex, but to me I felt this was a way of displaying how some seek this attention has a safe haven from the storm. I don't necessarily think the author was encouraging anything, but merely telling a story so I cant say I agree or disagree with what he wrote. I personally don't think behavior like this is encouraged because just like a storm it can be destructive. Entering into the storm can be destructive to yourself and the ones you
