The introduction of this chronology discussed the tragic life of Edgar Allan Poe, and mentions how it has affected his writings. Hammond talks about Poe’s tragic quality of his life and career, and how essential it has been for is work. Poe was left orphaned by his actor parents, then adopted by someone who never legally wanted to adopt him. Poe fell madly in love with his cousin, Virginia Clemm, who he was married to for 12 years. Poe became a widower after Virginia died in traumatic circumstances. The man who published Poe’s literary work, despised him and did everything in his power to make a bad name for Poe. Surrounded by awful circumstances, Poe channeled his life into his work; this is why a majority of his work is so dark.
