In this poem, the reader begins to get a good picture of the tragic style that Poe uses to convey a sense of fear and terror that he is well known for. Poe circles around the idea of death as a thing (or person) looking down upon an unsuspecting city, and as things go awry, the people look toward anything that can bring them hope: the sea, the sky, their “time-eaten towers that tremble not,” (Poe). They soon realize that death is already upon
