Poem Titled 'Treasure Squandered In Beowulf'

Treasure Squandered For many years I have built the great hoard of wealth, and for many years mere men have tried to take it. My great, shining, epic, intimidating piles of wealth, towering to the top of this cavern I call home. The gleam of diamonds and silver coins, the metallic scent of iron, and the pillars of many precious items. There is one thing in which I treasure more than metal, my towering pile of skulls. The heads of my enemies, each thinking they were strong enough to destroy me, now lay in a corner, hundreds of them. They sit atop the blood stained rock which has now taken the color of bronze. The smell of those vile things, that of sweat, mead, and rotting flesh. Others may ask why I keep corpses, and I answer as a testament …show more content…
On this day I heard is heart, his steps, and I felt him as he neared. The steps of a god thundering as if a storm approached, the snapping of chain mail boots and the rustling of weapons. The smell of an old god, the scent of Beowulf, and feeling overwhelming hatred began to overtake me. The old gray king, the great Beowulf neared. Stories of his conquest had even reached me. The many abominations he fought, the armies he had defeated and now it would be my time to face him. My greatest conquest yet, my fight with the great king of Herot. His corpse would be my greatest treasure. Greater than the glamorous piles of gems, ancient runes, and skulls. Greater than the piles of ancient weapons and the blood soaked walls of my lair. Greater than that of the head of Grendel, that Beowulf had the honor of taking himself. The difference here being that Grendel fled, yet I am fearless. I have the scars, I have tasted the blood of the strong and the week, and I had felt the harshness of the strongest blow. Beowulf would not present a problem, so until he arrives I shall rest.
