In a poem taken from Witness, by Karen Hesse, Merlin van Tornhout finds a buck, stuck in a frozen river, between two plates of ice. The buck was being chased by some dogs, and tried to cross the river, but fell in. Merlin got Constable Johnson, and together, they pulled the buck out of the crevice. The buck sat on the ice for a minute, stunned, before standing up, and jumping back into the crevice. Frustrated as they were, Merlin and Johnson lifted the buck back out again. This time, the buck decided to run away into the woods, making a loud snorting noise.
