Death is a horrible and sometimes an awful experience that is never an easy thing, especially for the loved ones affected by it, and in this story Luisa was directly affected by the dying lustful days or should I say years of her uncle’s life. Some people believe death should be a celebration and is in a sense of out with the old and in with the new but that is not what happened in this story. What seemed to be just the dying days of her uncle turned into just more than that since she was pressured into marrying him so she could inherit all of his belongings. “Everything looked motionless, pinioned in my memory, and the heat and the silence seemed to wither it all.” This sentence shows how that even in the setting everything is seeming to be consumed with death. The setting describes the weather as really warm outside and then it rained for days. When it rained the author called it, “the days of the spirit, sacred days.” “We went straight into the sick man’s room. As I entered, I felt cold. Silence and gloom preceded death.” This furthers my argument on how Luisa is uncomfortable around death and how it can be awkward. Throughout the story Luisa feels the house is filled with death and everything seemed cold this helps the audience understand the feeling she was having throughout this experience. When the uncle gives her the box full of treasures this lets her keep those memories and stories and continue on his life through his stories.
