The short poem by Billy Collins “Care and feeding” is a story I can connect my personal life experience with. The narrator therefore seems to be a human, who either considers himself a dog or feels like one. While reading the story, I was thinking about how selfish the narrator sound. Because he’s turning 420 years old in dog age then that’s when he decide he wants to be a dog. After living his life on earth enjoy everything he possibly can, now the only thing left for him to think about is how he wants to become a dog because he feel old and lonely.…
Joni Mitchell’s “Song for Sharon” describes the lesbian desire the narrator had for her childhood friend, Sharon. This is shown through her desire for, but lack of, a lover and marriage and aversion to children. The narrator mentions her relationship status to Sharon many times in this song; as if she is trying to emphasize that she is single and that Sharon is the reason. Whenever the narrator brings up wanting a relationship, she directs the song at Sharon.…
In “on the subway,” by Sharon Olds, the speaker is a white woman questioning her safety with a young black male. This poem emphasizes the current standings of white and clack colored people. The author does this by the use of tone, imagery, and organization. The use of tone in this poem is through the eyes of the woman.…
This situation was common because they lived during a time in which women were expected to have as many children as possible, no matter what the consequences were. She was ill for most of her child bearing life and died at forty- nine from tuberculosis; Sanger was only nineteen when she lost her mother. She blamed her struggles with child birth for her mother’s…
Writing with exaggeration and an aggressive tone, New York Post columnist Nicole Gelinas studies politicians economic habits in order to argue that government money should be used to pay for appliances that the government is responsible for. Gelinas tone indicates that the majority of her columns are intended for an audience composed of Right-Wing-Leaning, East Coast politicians. Her use of exaggeration throughout her columns gives her audience a current day event to relate the economics to. Tone is an important element in Gelinas writing because readers are able to relate as well as agree with her topics. The audience is important component of Gelinas columns because she only argues her of view in her columns and therefore is capable of making…

Empowering poetry allows a poet to relate to their audience through universal ideas of death and loss and the consolation brought by childhood memories. Gwen Harwood’s Father and Child and focuses on a recollection of childhood memories that deeply impacted her perspective on mortality and her relationship with her father. The mirroring structure of the Father and Child depicts a complete role reversal between the persona and her father, showing a switch in comforting each other in the face of death. Part two, Nightfall, opens with a general atmosphere of nostalgia, as the persona, not longer a child, reflects on her fathers approaching death. These notions evoke empathy which allows Harwood to connect with her audience by teaching them how…
Sharon Olds a poet that breaks the mold by putting woman issues and taboo subjects on the forefront such as in her poem “The Girl” which explain the encounter of a young girl and her friend being brutally rape; or in the poem “Sex without Love” which expose inner thoughts of loneliness without love. But one of the greatest example from my reading of Sharon Olds poems is that of “The Language of the Brag,” where Olds demonstrate a woman view of her pregnancy and the labor of birth of her child. This is an example of women writers seize the power of their own bodies by sharing women experience and by outlining the strength of a woman during childbirth. One reason why “the Language of the Brag” exemplifies Olds as a women writer that seize…
Till at last my baby sleeps, my baby sleeps with a bubbly of white milk at the corner of his mouth.” ’ where Mustapha Mond says ‘“Yes,’ nodding his head, ‘you may as well shudder’” (Huxley 38),this shows how there controller frowns on the thought of having a natural baby and that they aren’t supposed to like the idea of it either. The people are taught that monogamy and having a natural birth is wrong and not allowed. On the other hand in our world some women are frowned upon if they have an abortion or that they are unfulfilled if you don’t raise and have your own child.…
Graceful Death and Innocence Lydia Howard Huntley Sigourney written work where Based upon her “religious and moral truths” (p.g,106). Being a woman of the antebellum period, she experienced the dilemma behind presenting her work. She worried about how others would except her style of writing, especially coming from a woman. Beside that fear, her husband also disapproved of her work. Unfortunately, they fell into hard times, which led her to publish her first book of poems in 1815.…
Upon initial reading, “The Victims” by Sharon Olds seems to be a poem that paints the picture of a life of abuse; starting from the dawning of the exploitation and arching over into the life of the abused following the maltreatment. In the work, it is made to be believed that the clear victims of the poem are the speaker and their family—which is a rightful and obvious assumption—but there is another victim that is not as prevalent as that of the speaker and their family: the speaker’s father. After a second read, it is made evidently apparent that although the work does focus on the speaker and their family as the victims of the poem, the ideal that the father is also a victim is explored. Since the father is depicted as an abuser, it is seen…
“A heritage beyond St. Louis”, a line from the sentimental recollection of memories of Colleen McElroy’s poem “For My Children”. Fascinatingly, McElroy was born just right across the river/40 minute drive from our very own house, on October 30, 1935 (Reid). Although born in St. Louis, Missouri she took up the studies and writing with a distinct African tone in her work. Colleen McElroy’s poem “For My Children” incorporates her African American heritage as well as African language and dialect, as that is a pretty common way of writing for her. 1.…

In the poems “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes and “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou both authors convey the same message which is overcoming hardships in life. In the two poems they show their similarities through repetition which will be shown in the first paragraph and literary devices such as figurative language, metaphors and similes, while also showing their differences through parallel structure of both the poems, and through rhetorical questions. Hughes and Angelou show their similarities through repetition which helps the reader grasp the key concept of both poems which is to overcome obstacles. In “Mother to Son” it repeats “Life for me ain’t no crystal stair” (Hughes 2). Meaning that life has not treated the narrator of the…
