In such a technology-obsessed society, social media is everywhere, across all age groups and different backgrounds. Millions of comments and posts are created each day, which advertise personal details, such as a photo of yourself, or a message about your life. However, with each post comes a risk, which is that people around you may judge you or say something negative about what you show or say. In my poem titled, “The Other Side of the Screen”, the story of a girl being tormented by a male peer on a form of social media is told. After being slandered many times, the girl ends her life. Moreover, my poem explores the theme that you should always think before posting or saying something about someone, because you never know how they will react through the use of word connotations, a defined structure, repetition, and additional poetic devices. As stated above, in lines 24 through 26, black symbolizes not only the sadness of the girl, but her death. Rather than just explicitly stating that she died, I decided to use symbolism because it provides a clear picture of a funeral. Another example of symbolism in the text would be the “umbrellas” mentioned (line 24). When I think of group of umbrellas, I think of a rainy, dreary day, and I also think of a funeral. By talking about the funeral, the readers are hearing about the effects of cyber bullying and how it affects the people around the victim, too. In addition to symbolism, I added metaphor into the poem. The line, “She signed out,” is comparing her death to signing out of a social media account (line 27). When we die, we sign out of our lives, similar to how you would sign off of a social media account after being finished using it. This allows for a connection of social media and our lives, so how cyber bullying would affect

In the following story I will be drawing a parallel between the poem “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou, and the upcoming Homecoming football game between Lane and Curie. In it I will be demonstrating why I believe that both lane and Curie are caged birds. My piece is titled “Escaping one's Cage”. Escaping One’s Cage. Before the game even began you could see the growing anxiety on the Lane Tech football team, they were about to go out representing their entire school, in front of an immense crowd in their own stadium.…

The blue background surrounding the poem, accompanied by the slow-paced music, serves to set the mournful tone of the piece (Minor). The black and white images of the deceased woman represent that humans tend to reminisce on the brighter past when dealing with death. Thereon, humans will realize what they have taken for granted and will no choice but to “[cry] of course” (Minor). The haphazard images of hand-written sheet music represent the disorientation of the human mind when handling a loss…

My favorite worship song would have to be “Out of Hiding” by Steffany Gretzinger. The first time I heard it, I was at The Oaks Freedom Weekend and the Lord was setting me free from several things that were holding me back that I didn’t even realize were present. He was breaking away identity issues that others placed on myself and He renamed me as worthy and chosen. This song is dear to my heart because it reminds me of that day and also the point of view of The Father singing over His children. So often, we want to distance ourselves from the Lord whenever we are struggling with sin to hide because we want to clean ourselves up before coming to Him.…

It is a thought that can not be escaped from, even in the most joyous of times. The reactions of the guests show the different ways death affects those near to it. The young are startled and terrified, as a young death is the most ill-timed of all. To the old it causes a feeling of contentedness, as well as slight worry. Both symbols eloquently remark on deaths unavoidable truths, and how it is always a premature experience.…

A major problem arising in preteens, teens and young adults is the increasing use of social media and the impact it has been playing on their self-confidence. For as long as there have been strong influencers in society, there has been the issue of comparison. People have judged themselves based off how others appear since before there was even a television to showcase them, but with the increase of smartphones and the internet, so came the increase of something else far more harmful for this issue of comparison, social media. Social media, as a whole, gives a single person access to millions of other people and increases the pressure to appear flawless on their accounts. In the article “How Social Media is a Toxic Mirror”, published by Rachel Simmons in Time Magazine, Simmons’ main idea is how social media has become a method of directly comparing yourself to others based purely on what is posted on the internet.…

The tremulous light of poetry had shimmered inside me since middle school. I wanted to express all my emotions somehow. I didn’t have the best grammar and I didn’t always set up the storyline right. Being alone behind my four walls had blocked the negativity from the outside world; therefore, I didn’t care if what I wrote was illiterate. It was my form of medication to ease my throbbing mind to feel a release, so I continued to do it.…
