Proverbs: A Comparative Analysis

In the book of Proverbs, there are multiple verses about having a respectable work ethic in order to live life skillfully. “Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, But the hand of the diligent makes rich. He who gathers in summer is a son who acts wisely, But he who sleeps in harvest is a son who acts shamefully” (Proverbs 10:4-5). This verse means that you have to work hard in order to be successful, and you cannot be lazy when the work needs to be done. “He who tills his land will have plenty of bread, But he who pursues worthless things lacks sense” (Proverbs 12:11). This verse implies that people who work hard will be successful, but people who are consumed with meaningless things lack wisdom. “The hand of the diligent will rule, But the slack hand will be put to forced labor” (Proverbs 12:24). This verse explains that how the people who work hard will prosperous and will be in control of the lazy people. “In all labor there is profit, But mere talk leads only to poverty” (Proverbs 14:23). In some of the verses from the book of Proverbs, it discusses how money and wealth relate to living life skillfully. These verses teach us that a person’s financial wealth doesn’t actually mean they are well-off, and that having money isn’t meaningful unless you truly earned it. I can apply the message of these verses to my own life by remembering that happiness doesn’t stem from having an abundance of money, so I shouldn’t revolve my life around the idea that making as much money as I can is the right way to live my life.
