Preface
“You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think”-Christopher Robin: Winnie the Pooh

Works like the song, “Plant Life” by Owl City remind me to look for beauty in ordinary places with lyrics like “I’d rather waltz than just walk through the forest”, while pieces like Shel Silvertein’s poem, “Almost Perfect” remind me to embrace imperfections. These unexplainable works are beautiful to me in that there is not always an explanation as to why I like them. They are simply a reflection of what I feel and wishes or dreams that I have. These works are pieces that teach me lessons about myself that I did not know needed to be learned. For example, when Audrey Hepburn said, “For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone”, she taught me the meaning of what it means to be truly beautiful. These works are crucial in understanding myself and the person I want to

Each of the two stanzas has a different energy. In the first stanza, the eagle is very calm, ready to pounce, with a lot potential energy, sitting on the steep cliff. A momentous event in an individuals life may give new knowledge and a deepened understanding of themselves, others and life. Meaningful experiences may be negatively recognised by some individuals, however, they can adjust their feelings and acquire the freedom to grow. These notions are present throughout Steven Herrick’s verse-novel The Simple Gift and Raymond Carver’s short story Cathedral. The artwork Girl Before a Mirror, however, painted in 1932 by Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, contrasts with the concept of positive growth through experiences and alternately explores the opposite.…

Corn mazes are huge, sometimes extravagant, mazes made out of corn where children and children at heart find amusement in making wrong turns and getting lost looking for the end. David Barber uses a corn maze to show that in life everything we do, whether a positive or a negative impact, is an experience. Experiences form the basis of all types of human relationships (Volkmer). Barber uses paradoxes, an extended metaphor, and diction to portray the idea that the experiences in life impact one later. The poem revolves around a young man who was “tormented by his desire for a girl”(p.1322). While this poem is labeled as a “romantic folk song”(p.1322), the good use of literary elements, syntax, and language added a bit of tint to the love story.…
