Poem Analysis: One Art By Elizabeth Bishop

Just as stated in “One Art” by Elizabeth Bishop, “the art of losing isn’t hard to master.” However, as revealed at the end of the poem, it can seem easy to have a loss not bother an individual, but when one stops lying to themselves and let the loss hit them, there is a sense of sadness due to the realization of what is really lost. Something lost does not have to be always be a person or place, it can be miniscule as a cello. That miniscule object can seem like nothing of importance to another individual, yet to that individual who lost it, it can mean everything to them. That miniscule loss of a cello is my most taunting loss. The cello represents what could have been, something I did artistically that was all of my own. It is the regret I live with, for giving up and not trying hard enough for something I wanted. My love for the cello all began in the fourth grade when my grandma signed me up for orchestra. My first string instrument was not the cello, it was the typical violin. The violin did not go well. It is most prominent when I am listening to a song by my favorite artist, Brandi Carlile, because the two instruments she likes to use often are the cello and the piano. Those two instruments when played together, have a way of taking control of my emotions and make me calm while feeling the emotion through the words said by the artist. It is moments like that in a song that make me have my longing desire to play the cello maybe even the piano even more. I have made a promise to myself that when I graduate from ASU, I will buy myself a cello (one day a piano) and I will either take class or teach myself how to read sheet music.
