I think that is ironic that David Slavitt is talking about how everyone wants to be on the Titanic because he knows that the Titanic sunk but I think that he is meaning how they died in style first class on a ship and will be remembered and how with human nature humans want to be remembered no matter the cost his writing on the tragedy could be compared to someone writing a poem on 9/11 but 9/11 happened to recently to really be able to write a poem like this without the entire world giving them criticism. It would be the same kind of deaths as someone jumping from the twin towers and dying a heroic death. I also think Slavitt is pointing out human ignorance to the view of life as it is and should be trying a way to live life to the fullest instead of worrying about their legacy because why would someone not want to buy a ticket and make their end goal to be remembered a reality Slavitt pokes criticism by saying you die with a crowd(line 4-5) yet you are still alone no matter which way you die he also says that this death is quick and painless (line 12) at the time he wrote this in the 1980s life and human condition probably wasn’t as bad as today but it could have been better if everyone read this poem by David Slavitt. In the last line of the poem he says we all go but only a few die first class this is referring to how the lucky and fortunate to ride the titanic had the best death and how
