Growing up as a hispanic woman in America has always been more difficult than I thought it was going to be. There were many times where I felt excluded, judged or like I am not as good as other people. Throughout my life this has always affected my happiness because it was never as easy as I wanted it to be. With that being said, many people that are also a different race also struggle with this problem and this affects their wellbeing as well. I came to realize what a struggle being a person of color is to other people as well after carefully reading a short story by Junot Diaz called “Wildwood” and a poem by Claudia Rankine called “From Citizen Six” where both of the characters were treated unfairly, and ran into issues on a daily basis because…

Furthermore, I will also outline how the aspect that people should never give up is shown in the short story The Fly. Finally I will discuss the struggle to be independent in The Captive Lion.…

He wanted the attention that was associated with fear, and the school was an easy target that would ensure him worldwide fame within hours. In relation to Pinker and Mack, Cho’s outbursts in his poetry class were all over the news, feeding the perception between mental illness and mass shootings. The sonnet begins with the death of both pleasure and pain. Pain is described with the typically masculine traits of being “stern [and] hard featured” (2), yet is described with the feminine pronoun of “her” (3). Later on, joy is given the masculine pronouns of “his” and “him” (12), but is given the (typically) feminine trait of “innocence” (10). Thus, in Bryant’s personification of these two states of being, he portrays them as opposites, and yet each contains something of the other--similar to the Taoist principle of yin and yang.…

Perfection - an expectation that seems to be demanded out of young girls and women in today’s society. It’s not uncommon to see ones conforming to this expectation. Those that strive for this perfection aren’t oblivious to the fact that it is emotionally draining, yet it’s still something ones seem to strive for and continually critique each other on. It is often said that “pain is beauty”, and that “beauty is skin deep” but it’s the eager expectation of perfection that can kill someone from the inside out and ruin the innocent heart of a beautiful girl. In Beyoncé’s song, “Pretty Hurts”, published in 2013, and Marge Piercy’s poem, “Barbie doll”, published in 1971, both authors aim to send the same message to those effected by these expectations.…

From the Reading 2.2, the poems display main themes of love and desire by which the speaker in each poem either directly refers to deeply loving an individual or, like in the first poem, references are made to a mistress understanding the problems of the speaker and the speaker revealing a love for the mistress because the problem described is a comparison to the love he has for her, since it is deep (pg. 58) While the speakers in the last two poems are desiring the love of the person whom they love, the first poems speakers love is out of appreciation for that understanding between the speaker and his lover. These same themes of love and desire can be found in a large variety of ways in our culture. The romance novels that are produced, the Twilight Series, the books and movies, and the many love movies that are available, all portray that same volume of love and desire that are expressed in the poems.…

I think one of the most interesting kinds of stories are true stories that relate things that really happened in life and also offer people a look into a bit of history. I would like to relate some of their story and particularly tell you about my dad. This is the beginning of the journey.…
