He also seems to be referring to things he cannot control such as when he says ¨when your dreams all fail¨ he's trying to say he had goals and ambitions, but he is unable to achieve them. This song is about a man who resolves to (or is trying to alter his ways) before he starts changing the world. He speaks about how certain situations he has seen has really affected him (e.g. the impoverished children in the streets) and how he desires and feels that to make a really major change, he must start with himself (the man in the mirror.) This song focuses on self-reflection and the inner struggle of one individual to become better, more upright and more moral. It brings about questions such as, “What is the individual’s responsibility to society? Can we change the world by changing ourselves?…

“Song of Powers” is a poem I selected because I liked the way the author set it up. It takes an ordinary game, rock-paper-scissors, and makes it into a metaphor. To me, this poem is about putting aside your own personal desires and strengths to live in harmony with the others around you. Each, rock, paper, and scissor, has their own strength, but in the end, they all destroy each other and end the poem on their own, which is the caution the author has for the reader. The poems tone is somewhat boastful in the beginning, where each shape in the game touts their own strengths.…

I will be discussing the transforming effect that the literature I have read has had on me. I will outline the discrimination in Freak the mighty and The Curious incident of the dog in the night time. Also, in Much Ado about Nothing I will outline the immaturity of Claudio as well as the horrific manner in which Claudio treated Hero throughout the film. Furthermore, I will also outline how the aspect that people should never give up is shown in the short story The Fly. Finally I will discuss the struggle to be independent in The Captive Lion.…

The Singer tells the story of the “Singer” , an allusion to Jesus, who is proclaimed the “Troubadour” (Messiah) by the Earthmaker (God). Throughout the story, the Singer proclaims the Star Song, the Word of God, and is in constant conflict with the World Hater (Devil). The Singer shares several similarities with the Gospel of Mark: Mark’s portrait of Jesus is “The Suffering Servant” as shown through 8:31, 9:31& 9:12 where Jesus states that the Son of Man will suffer by man.…

    The Victims Poem Analysis

Upon initial reading, “The Victims” by Sharon Olds seems to be a poem that paints the picture of a life of abuse; starting from the dawning of the exploitation and arching over into the life of the abused following the maltreatment. In the work, it is made to be believed that the clear victims of the poem are the speaker and their family—which is a rightful and obvious assumption—but there is another victim that is not as prevalent as that of the speaker and their family: the speaker’s father. After a second read, it is made evidently apparent that although the work does focus on the speaker and their family as the victims of the poem, the ideal that the father is also a victim is explored. Since the father is depicted as an abuser, it is seen…

This song talks about the speaker who is abused by her boyfriend but she stands by him because she loves him. This is similar to when we find out that Mayella was abused by her father but still loves him because well, it’s her father. They both show unhealthy relationships and how bad things can be at home. The mood in both of this song and the book is desperate. They are both desperate for love and will do anything to stay by their family/man.…

The World’s Wife is a collection of poetry that successfully challenges society’s preconceptions of what it means to be a woman. While the female voice is often silenced, Duffy focuses on the women who were in the midst of male-centric stories in Biblical, mythological and fairytale narratives. Some may argue that the expectations of women are completely subverted in poems such as The Devil’s Wife, in which the maternal and nurturing image of a woman is replaced by the disturbing portrayal of the infamous child serial killer Myra Hindley. Alternatively, some feminine qualities are also explored in this poem, such as a woman’s dependence on men, as demonstrated by Hindley’s twisted, passionate love for Ian Brady.…
