Because He Lives
Optimism entails two different aspects. The first aspect encompasses the attitude or mindset that arises due to hopefulness and confidence about the future. So often this word is associated with happiness, when in actuality it relates more to the word joy. Joy exists regardless of the circumstance, while happiness comes forth only as the transient result of prosperity, pleasure, knowledge, wealth, popularity, etc. The chasing of these accomplishments creates temporary fulfillment followed by the desire for more. More money, more knowledge, more friends, more status, more more more. Yet, when a life that has chased happiness comes towards its end, the inevitability of death unmasks itself and the toil of life, the valleys, the

The wise man faces the same fate as the fool, the beggar as the rich man, the somebody as the nobody. So if optimism derives from hopefulness and confidence about the future, this life of temporary fulfillment could never have held true optimism. A person, may have faced each mountain with courage, walked every valley with dignity, looked for the good, overcome the bad, but if they did this all for themselves, in their own will, for timely purpose, ignoring the beckoning of eternity on their heart, they still have no true hope or confidence in their future.
That is where the joy factor comes in. The hebrew word for joy, simchah, translates to a state of mind and an orientation of the heart. It arrives due to a settled state of contentment, confidence and hope. So simchah, joy, stems from hope, a hope that results from an orientation of the heart. It poses interest then that orientation refers to a change, an adjustment, or an acclimation, because this means that joy really results from a changed heart. The human heart fixes on self, self happiness, self will, self

For me, this aspect depends entirely on the first. In order to believe that good predominates over evil, we must have a guideline. Without a guideline we question right from wrong, good from evil. This questioning leads to relativistic morals, and relativism bears the terrifying truth that humans with selfish hearts establish their own moral standards. This subjective morality allows for a murderer’s justification, a clear conscience for the husband who left his family, the rationale for stealing, and the grounds for every other sinful action to count as acceptable. Because, who has the right to say they did anything wrong? A society of relativism most certainly instigates its own downfall. Those hesitant to believe our society demonstrates this corruption need only to look around, ideas that gender is simply a social construct bombard us, our culture promotes the message that marriage bears no importance and consists of nothing more than a piece of paper designed to keep women down, and life, the greatest gift, is disregarded to the point that a human fetus even with a beating heart, a formed human body, and a conscious brain has less of a right to life than a cat. In view of all this lies the reason why we desperately need a guideline. A person blinded by their own evil and dead in their own sin cannot possibly believe good predominates over evil, for their view accommodates irrefutable

In dreadful places such as the South Bronx, you’d think joy would be something hard to come across, right? “Cliffie, as we set out onto St, Ann’s... seems as buoyant, and as lively, and as charmingly mysterious, as seven-year-olds anywhere.” (p.4 l.23-26) Even here, in a place where people aren’t expected to live long, and crime is common, even here, there is joy and happiness. The third level of joy is giving back. This is seen in giving your emotional support, and the finances to help your family or spouse. The fourth sense of excitement is moral joy, being with the love of your life and your family seems like all the moral joy you could need. It is there to assist us in disengagements, a flight or fight response, or to attack. Positive emotions play the opposite role, helping us to “broaden our abiding intellectual, physical, and social resources, building up reserves we can draw upon when a threat or opportunity presents itself.” People with high positive affect do not feel good all the time but just more often than those who don’t. However, positive emotion can undo the negative emotions, based on the happiness formula. The equation is ‘H=S + C + V’.…

What is “happiness” and how is it obtained? The word “happiness” is defined as ‘a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy’. The decisions people make on a day-to-day basis are to reach the ultimate goal of being happy. While everyone strives to obtain happiness, not everyone succeeds. Volitaire’s Use of Pangloss Optimism is a philosophy which supports the idealism that everything happens out of absolute necessity, everything happens for the best, and that we are living in the “best of all possible worlds.” In a short novel titled “Candide, or Optimism” published by Voltaire in 1759, Voltaire makes a excellent case against Optimism as a philosophical position by using a character by the name of Pangloss to portray an exaggerated view of Optimism. By the reader seeing how ridiculous these scenarios are and how obvious the problems with this philosophy are, it supports his view that this idealism is false and flawed. Pangloss’s philosophy parodies the ideas of the Enlightenment thinker G. W. Von Leibniz.…

It is believed that happiness is self-contained in people, and is not something that can be found elsewhere; therefore one can experience happiness despite unfortunate circumstances. Luke 17:20 states, “the coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, nor will people say, ‘here it is,’ or ‘there it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst”. “Kingdom of God” in this bible verse indicates holiness in the heart when one keeps a close relationship with God. One can achieve happiness by changing internally to be holy, not externally. One can be holy by being dedicated to God and developing a close relationship with Him.…

Voltaire’s Candide is one of the most famous works of the Enlightenment. Voltaire questions a huge variety of ideas and social establishments through his satire, including the philosophy of Optimism promoted by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. It is generally accepted that Candide disputes Leibniz ' optimism; there are many instances that indicate this in the text, especially surrounding the Eldorado episode. Optimism is the idea that God created the “best of all possible worlds” (Leibniz 228), and that the presence of evil is not something that God cooperates in but is something that God merely permits and directs at good (183).…

Many people like to create a better picture in their head rather than what the actual situation. Optimism is seen as taking the situation and making it seem as if it isn’t as terrible as it really is. Yann Martel does this same thing in the book Life of Pi by using symbolism. Yann Martel supports the theme of choosing the “better” story by using the symbolism of animals and religion. The following passage from Schopenhauer first sentence states “ Optimism is at bottom the unmerited self-praise of the world, the will to live, which views itself complacently in it’s works.” What this sentence is trying to say is that every human being should feel sure of the truth that she/he has to the greatest extent assertion to happiness and pleasure. If this does not happen then it will only leave one being to believe that she/he is at fault. She/he would then come to a conclusion that their existence no longer matter. From this happening then one’s being than becomes a denial for the will to live.…

My take on happiness deals more with perspective and the basic goods. Meaning, we live in a world where approximately 3.1 million children die from hunger each year (worldhunger.org). The simple fact that my myself and family do not have to worry about where our next meal is coming from is a blessing which keeps me happy. Therefore, knowing that I’m in a good place in the world and knowing that I have the basic things to survive like food, water, and shelter, keep me happy. One could say that I was lucky to have been born in a country that offers so much.…
