The plot of the story is about a prince named Prince Prospero. Prince Prospero was a very rich man. There was a illness spreading rapidly throughout their town killing everyone. The illness was called the red death and was described as fatal and hideous. The Prince thought the only escape from the red death was to lock himself away in his castle with many of his friends. To pass time they drank and partied, mocking this plague thinking they could escape it. The way the castle was set up was seven chambers or rooms. These rooms were color coordinated, with the last room being dark, black and containing a large ebony clock. The tone starts out with the citizens thinking they are all okay and are safe from the red death. The party and forget about what is going on in the real world. The tone for the rest of the poem then darkens when the figure that represents the red death appears. The dark tone sad tone is shown most after the Prince dies when the ebony clock strikes.
