Poe And Jorge Luis Borges: A Literary Analysis

Two of the most prominent authors Edgar Allen Poe and Jorge Luis Borges uses similar literary devices such as, indirect characterization, symbolism and imagery differently and the same throughout their literary works. For example, in Borges mysterious short story “The Garden of Forking Paths” (1941) he uses imagery to capture and inform those confused in life on how to decide which path is right for them through the symbolism of the experiences of Captain Lidell Hart in 1916. That coincides with Poe’s amusing short story “The purloined letter” (1845) written to those in search of something to explain that (“beneath the nose of the whole world, by way of best preventing any portion of that world from perceiving it”) things are best hidden right in front of us because we tend to overlook, using the “Purloined letter” as a symbol. We see this from the eyes of a royal lady and her friend Dupin in “18---”that also gives us insight into who the characters are as people. He uses symbolism in the character’s name such as Prefect which conclusively means Perfect. In the light of the prefect was to find the purloined letter. This is similar to the new Lionsgate film “The Perfect Guy”, where the leading lady/ royal lady believes the Perfect/”Prefect” guy will have the correct answers and solve the problems but ends up not being helpful and a waste of time. In contrast, the Labyrinth in “The Garden of Forking paths” is used as a symbol that Captain Hart is at a critical point in his life where he must make a decision on his future.
