Speech given to the Sixth Grade Class at Podunk Elementary School May 5, 2013 presented by Mr. Morgan Wright, founder of “Pioneers Got No Respect Project”:

Good Morning students, teachers, parents, and guest.
Today I would like to appeal to you for support of an idea. The idea being, the need for a national monument to honor those who moved west to explore and eventually settle these unfamiliar areas those make up this great country. Not only do I wish to share with you the adventure, danger, and importance of this historical event, but am going to ask your involvement to get something done.

The formation of this country wasn’t actually totally a result of the actions by people you might recognize, the George Washington’s, the Abe Lincoln’s,

Consider this excerpt from the same document, “For many weeks we had been accustomed to see property abandoned and animals dead or dying. But those scenes were here doubled and trebled. Horses, mules, and oxen, suffering from heat, thirst, and starvation, staggered along until they fell and died on every rod of the way. Both sides of the road for miles were lined with dead animals and abandoned wagons.” She goes on to recall, “The owners had left everything, except what provisions they could carry on their backs, and hurried on to save …show more content…
Why am I telling you all this? What do you today have to do with this history? Well, in my opinion, none of us would be here today, at least not in this present form, if it were not for these brave souls. Much to my shock and amazement, as important as this movement was in our progress towards becoming a great nation, these individuals are not formally recognized, respected, or honored. The time is now for us to remedy this oversight. I am asking you to join me in appealing to Congress to show some long awaited gratitude for this nation’s trailblazers and their sacrifices. I am petitioning you to write your congressmen, or better yet, form a petition from your community members to erect a National Monument in honor of the pioneers. I will provide with my website and other contact information to assist you with this endeavor. When enough of us speak out on this matter, those who can put this plan into action will

In this transcript of “Mayor Landrieu’s Address on Confederate Monuments” written by Derek Cosson, Mayor Landrieu advocates for the removal of Confederate monuments located in New Orleans’. The mayor states, “it is self-evident that these men did not fight for the United States of America, they fought against it. They may have been warriors, but in this cause, they were not patriots” (pg.4, 2017). The essence of Mayor Landrieu’s argument is that these statues of Confederate soldiers are not to remain as they glorify the soldiers and the actions that they have done in the past. Statues are there to remember those who are worth remembering for their work to make the country as marvelous as can be.…

So why should we build a monument to the pioneers? Why should we honor them, when there are thousands of other historical figures more deserving of recognition? I propose that we think of someone else to build a monument for instead. The faults and the misgivings of the pioneers are too many for them to be immortalized in stone. This cannot happen.…

Should confederate monuments be torn down or leave them where they are standing I think the confederate monuments should be torn down because they could be offensive to some people and they represent slavery and the dark parts of our history and people don’t want to be reminded of that part of our nation’s history also made the idea that the white race is supreme . These monuments honor confederate solider’s and their leaders (monument video) when in reality they should be honoring the people who stopped the confederacy not the people who. Started it this shows that we are showing honor to the wrong people and not only did the confederacy support people owning slaves wanted to leave the union and make their own country were…
