For my creative writing piece I decided to focus on the genre of podcasts. Podcasts are a common medium used to inform and interact with an audience. I choose to do a podcast because my topic at hand, immigration, can be very broad and contains a lot of information. The video format allowed for a more direct connection to the audience. Though the general public could be considered the audience for this piece, I found it more important to target an audience less informed with immigration. For example, students learning the basics of immigration would really benefit from this simple outlook on the topic. By using pathos, logos, and visuals paired with audio, a simple story became a meaningful narration.
This podcast detailed my grandma’s personal story about her immigration to America. Because the story comes from personal experiences, pathos is a key convention. She was born in England. The first few years of her life were spent in there, during WWII. She had to stand by, at age four to six, and watch her dad fight in the war that caused a bombing and endless destruction in her hometown. The visuals in this podcast propel the personal story. Many pictures were black and white to imply a later time in history. Words were bold when introducing an important topic. My grandma’s voice existed in parts that were intended to be more dramatic. My voice existed in parts just to serve as a light, informative narration. Audio narration also breaks apart the story to make the video more organized. I found it very important to use my voice, opposed to subtitles, because a lot of reading can become very draining.
