Pocahontas Vs Disney

Improved Essays
After exploring the various perspectives surrounding the story of John Smith and Pocahontas, I argue that Disney shouldn’t be held socially responsible for their presentation of history. I believe in this to be true because there are already sources out there to present history accurately. Educators shouldn’t have to rely on Disney movies to teach their students an accurate representation of what actually happened. For instance, Laura McClure writes in “Pocahontas” as Teaching Tool, “Students can research the real Pocahontas story and then compare it to the film” (McClure 129). This shows that movies like Pocahontas can be used as a basic learning tool, but if students want to dig deeper into the story they should do research in other sources.

The California Department of Education requires high school students to take one course of U.S. history in order to graduate and move onto college (California Department of Education).
