John Smith arrived to Jamestown in May of 1609 but didn’t encounter the Powhatan Indians until the winter of 1609. Once captured by Powhatan Indians he was displayed in several Indian tribe city before being taken to the capital Werowocomoco where his head was placed onto a stone seconds away from being bashed in by an executioner. Pocahontas rushed to John Smith and laid her head on his to stop him from being executed, but many ask why Pocahontas save him. Legend has it that Pocahontas was in love with John Smith who was in his mid-20 while Pocahontas was 14. Many argue that she loved him and thus saving his from being killed, but at 14 its highly unlikely one can fall in love at that young of an age and from only seeing John once raises speculation on why she saved him.
I believe that Pocahontas saving Captain John Smith was ritual of some sort because after Pocahontas saved John the Chief Commander made John a chief in their tribe and trade began between the two. Corn, Clothing, came from the Indians in exchange for Guns, Money, and New Medicines. If Pocahontas did in fact love John she would have left with him when he went back to England but she chose to stay and eventually married tobacco planter John Rolfe and left with him to England where she died eventually.
Pocahontas was a mystery because not much was known about her we only know what they wrote down. Thus leaving many to wonder if any of this actually happened or maybe John Smith made some if not all of it
