Pneumatology or charisma is the study of the gifts that God gives to Christians in order to do His work on earth (Thompson 2001, pp 1135). The Holy Spirit is the actual giver of these gifts at the time a person makes a conscious decision to become saved and edify God. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit at the time of Pentecost with the sign gifts in order to confirm the works of the Apostles [(Sons 1973) (1Cor. 2:17)]. Also this was a way prove to the Jews that God and Christ were real, as well to lift up and edify the Church (Towns 2008, pp.271). There are many more gifts, however they do not all fall in the same category. The fruit of the spirit is the motivated by love and is shown by a person’s nature and actions. The virtues that are gifted through the Holy Spirit according to Galatians 5:22-23, are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and self control. These are needed in order for others to be able to see that the person has the attributes of a Christian, in their daily lives. This is the world’s sign that the person has reached spiritual maturity. As Paul stated in Corinthians, “that all might know the things that are freely given to us of God” (Towns 2008, pp 303). The Bible explains about these gifts and how they are manifest in three (3) separate areas: Romans 12:3-8, 1Corinthians 12-14, and Ephesians 4:7-11 (Towns 2008, pp …show more content…
As a sign of that confession a person is baptized by water. This according to John 3:5, is where a man has to be “born of water and the Spirit” otherwise he cannot enter the Kingdom of God (Sons 1973). This is a means of ‘radical inward and outward personal purification’, as John the Baptist said a symbol of complete and total repentance of sin and reformation of life [(Sons 1973)(White 2001, pp 137)]. Another way that it is seen is as an initiation rite into the body of Christ as a way of showing ‘complete surrender unto the Spirit’ (White 2001, pp.137).
