Pluto: Dwarf Planet

19. Pluto is no longer considered a planet, and is considered a dwarf planet because it has not “cleared the neighborhood around its orbit. This saying pretty much means that Pluto has gained control of the gravity around it. So astronomers made a name for these planets known as the dwarf planets, to show that it is a planet that continues to orbit the sun, but it hasn’t cleared the neighborhood.

An individual has a higher chance of getting hit by an asteroid (1 in 700,000) in their lifetime, than they have winning the Powerball (1 in 185,000,000). However, it is still very unlikely, that such an event will happen during our time on Earth. After all, there are between 1.1 and 1.9 million asteroids in the Asteroid Belt, between Mars and Jupiter (“Asteroids: In Depth” 2). Who is to say one of those massive asteroids will not go on a collision course with Earth, and cause another extinction-level event, like the one around 66 million years ago, that wiped the dinosaurs off the face of the Earth?…

There are major differences between the Terrestrial planets, the Jovian planets, and the Dwarf planets. Terrestrial planets are planets made of rocks, so logically they have a hard surface. Terrestrial planets also have a molten core, usually few moons, and characteristics such as valleys, volcanoes and craters. Examples are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. Jovian Planets are large planets composed mostly of gases, such as hydrogen and helium, with a small rocky core.…

About 20 years ago, kids in school learned about nine planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. These nine planets orbited the Sun, and they were the only planets that mattered. But things have changed, and the reign of the Nine is officially over. Most famously, Pluto was demoted to “dwarf planet” status in 2006. Bigger shifts in our understanding of the planetary population, however, actually began a decade earlier:…

Our NASA team is proposing an exploratory mission to the planet Pluto. Although the planet is very far away we have reason to believe that with the technology to get there and set up a base. We have done extensive research on this planet and strongly recommend that this mission is approved and carried out. One reason that this mission is essential to the development of NASA and the human race is the physical features of the land. Pluto is cold, but has 30% water ice and 70% rock material.…

From my general reading of the book “Why I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming” by Mike Brown, I was able to grasp an understanding of his personal character. In the beginning of the book it’s hard to point out his personality, due to his brief insight on his childhood upbringing. He began describing his passion and direct gravitation towards astronomy, which would later impact his life tolerably. His metamorphosis from childhood to adulthood, slightly changed, but in the end became his life profession. He did not disclose too much on his childhood friends, or relationships growing up, to give a judgment of his personality.…

There's been an ongoing debate on the idea and topic about Pluto's classification as a planet. In 1930, Pluto was discovered 400 billion miles away from the sun by Clyde Tombaugh. " Clyde Tombaugh was an American astronomer who worked for the Lowell observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona" (Wikipedia). When Pluto was discovered it was classified as a planet, it became the 9th planet in the solar system. It wasn't much longer before its classification was in questioned, as a result people started saying that it was not a planet no more, but the classification was now a Kuiper Belt left over. "…
