Pluto And The Black Cat Analysis

From the very beginning of the story Poe starts by stating he does not expects the reader to understand him or to believe what we are about to witness. “I neither expect nor solicit belief. Mad indeed would I be to expect it, in a case where my verse surely do I not dream” (837). Poe makes this notion because of his wives superstitious believes. “My wife, who at heart was a little tinctured with superstition, made frequent allusion to the ancient popular notion, which regarded all black cats as witches in disguise” (838).after drinking excessively Poe hangs Pluto off one of the threes in their yard. That night their house catches on fire leaving nothing except for one of the walls. On the standing wall was an imprint of a cat that resembled Pluto. “I grew, day by day, more moody, more irritable, more regardless of the feelings of others. I suffered myself to use intemperate language to my wife. At length, I even offered her personal violence” (838). Poe begins to feel the impression of the crime he had committed against the unoffending brute. To calm his mind and actions he starts longing for another companion of the same specious. He stumbles upon a black cat at one of the local bars and brings him home. After a couple of days Poe realizes his hate for the new companion starts taking over him “I soon found a dislike to its arising within me. This was just the reverse of what I had anticipated; but- I know not how or why it was—its evident fondness for myself rather disgusted and annoyed. By slow degrees, these feelings of disgust and annoyance rose into the bitterness of hatred” (841).
