Pluto: A Narrative Fiction

“It was really cold. That was my first thought, comin’ out of that ship,” the elderly woman grins at him, thrusting a steaming cup of tea in his hands. He chuckles a bit.

The young man clears his throat. “So, miss, I have some questions for you, if you don’t mind.” “Not at all!” She sits down across from him, sipping her own tea. Wind blows outside, snow covering the world. It’s dark outside. Freezing. Pluto is a desolate planet.

“What was it like to move here?” “Terrifying,” she chuckles, “I was only about twelve at the time. Having lived in Florida my whole life, the weather was a bit of a shock,” she smiles absently, feeling nostalgic. “Florida?” he’d never heard of such a place. “Was that on Earth?” the woman nods. “Believe it or not, but I used to look like you,” she says, gesturing to his tan skin. The man is from Venus, where the sun burns big and bright, where the day’s are lingering and the night’s are few and far in between.

Her father and brother follow.

“The night’s are long here, eh?” “Yes they are,” she pauses, “but to continue your question, I really hated it. At the time, we had no way of heatin’ the house. We were freezing. My dad had to shovel snow every single morning!” Ice starts pelting the windows. The wind is howling, like a wolf at the moon. In the distance, little lights dot the landscape, where others have settled.

They get to their house, a simple wooden cabin. It’s snowing lightly. Dull, grey clouds are overhead. It is bitterly

Astronomers from the International Astronomical Union (IAU), an organization that functions as an international consensus marker in astronomy, were assigned the task of voting on the definition of planets. Some have criticized that this discussion amongst scientists was not without political and non-scientific emotions or nostalgia. One rendition of the definition would have kept Pluto as a planet and included Eris and Ceres, boosting the number of planets to twelve. Still another recommendation kept the total planets at nine, keeping Pluto and the other recognized planets, but without providing scientific logic behind it. And finally, the third proposition, which would remove Pluto as a planet, dropping the number down to eight.…

In a recent NASA blog post, Kelsi Singer, a researcher at Southwest Research Institute working on NASA’s New Horizons, goes over an interesting discovery made about Pluto: It seems to have a near infinite supply of nitrogen. Pluto is Gassy The most recent images returned by New Horizons shows that Pluto’s surface is mostly composed of nitrogen, just like Earth’s. There is; however, about a 20 percent difference in composition; Earth’s atmosphere is around ~78 percent nitrogen while Pluto’s is ~98 percent. Another interesting fact is that the nitrogen in Pluto’s atmosphere is actually leaving, and at a pretty alarming rate.…

For years, astronomers have debated if Pluto is a planet or not. Pluto has been taken off the list of planets, and has now been classified as a Dwarf Planet. According to IAU.org, “A dwarf planet is classified as an object in orbit around the Sun that is large enough to have its own gravity pull itself into a round shape... A dwarf planet may also orbit in a zone that has many other objects in it.” Pluto now falls into the dwarf planet category because of its size and because it is in a zone of other same-sized objects known as the trans neptunian region.…

Neptune is also known as the is a dark, cold, and windy planet that’s been discovered in 1846 by John Couch Adams, Johann Gottfried Galle, and Urbain Le Verrier. The reason for Neptune being -10 degrees is because it’s eight planets away from the sun. A way to describe Neptunes physical features is “Neptune has an incredibly thick atmosphere comprised of 74% hydrogen, 25% helium and approximately 1% methane. Its atmosphere also contains icy clouds and the fastest winds recorded in the solar system. Particles of icy methane and minor gases in the extremities of the atmosphere give Neptune its deep blue colour.”…
