Plus Sized Woman

At first, I thought that this is amazing because I have been overweight almost my entire life and I had this false perception of what beauty is because I never saw any models that were bigger. I would squeeze my love handles and wear big clothing because I was embarrassed about the way that I looked. I wished that my weight would magically disappear so that I can be beautiful.

Overwhelmed by media body images of thin models, body builders, young girls and young men are growing up convinced that being thin and buff is the ideal to be accepted in the world. According to Michelle Siegel, Ph.D., in her Article “The Body Betrayed” states that the average person – sees between 40 million to 50 million ad commercials on television a year which one of every 11 commercials has a direct message about beauty. In these commercials it gives men and women the ideal of an average American man, and woman, and how people should look like for example a woman with a body of a model that is 5 foot ten, and 107 pounds and as for men tall handsome with a built muscular body. In the media, the woman that is size two or three is better looking than a size eight. In this commercial, it takes a size eight woman and puts her in front of a refrigerator contemplating on if she should have a small piece of cake, a large portion of the cake and eight celery and then skip dinner because that will burn the calories for the day. Then walks up a size four woman and she grabs a Yoplait and says yum strawberries cheese cake. Then that, in turn, makes up the other woman’s mind to eat the Yoplait instead of the real cheesecake. In my opinion, I don’t think their intent was to encourage eating disorders.…

I found that looking at the bigger picture when it comes to what the media comes at us with we will find that it’s not all right or okay. Reading “Media, Markets, and the Culture of Thinness in America” made me realize how I was there with many women and men that deal with the struggles of looking a certain way in order to be accepted. I remember idolizing women plastered on magazines that wore a size two when I was a size five. I gave in just like many others and resorted to not eating as well as purging. When I look back on that part of my life I think if I didn’t have that invisible pressure would I have still made those choices.…

Beside these ads are comments posted regarding the amazing and fantastic appearance of these women. It is photographs such as these that give women the impression that unless they are 5’8 and weigh 100 pounds they are somehow fat and ugly. Models are a great example because they are encouraged to stay at an unhealthy weight. When a designer has new clothes sewn, there is as little material as possible used until after a showing of the new designs. The models wearing these clothes need to be a small size in order to fit into them.…
