Plucky: Sacrifice In A Hollywood Film

Improved Essays
If Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) in North by Northwest is noted for his boldness and nonchalance combined with personal charm, Manny Balestrero (Henry Fonda) in The Wrong Man for his humility, calm and composure, then Grace Kelley can be seen as an embodiment of pluck courage and self-confidence at its heroic heights. America is well known for its plucky courage and mettle/fortitude they displayed during the two world wars. Hitchcock could well appreciate it living in Hollywood as a British citizen having his roots in Britain. Hollywood films have exhibited this bravado time and again while projecting the American characters as part of the myth making structure. Small courage usually never finds its way in genre films which included

Ambrose Redmoon once said, “Courage is not the absence of fear but rather the judgment that something is more important than fear.” This quote is expressing that courage is not the lack of fear; it is the triumph over it. A courageous person is not one who has no fear or worries. It is one who has fear but preserves through any situation instead of backing down. To Kill A mockingbird expresses that courage is an emotion that makes people push to go beyond their normal actions and strive for what they believe is right.…

In the story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee courage among many other things is a key theme in the story. There are two characters that comes to mind when I think of courage in the story and those people are Atticus Finch and Boo Radley. These two characters show tremendous courage throughout the story from saving the kids to defending Tom Robinson even though it puts their life and privacy at risk. The real courage here is putting the needs and wants of others in front of their own.…

Surviving is a hard task. Movies, stories, T.V. series, and comics often show protagonists, whether they be a girl or a boy of a heroic genre, thriving through their conflicts. If noticed, most of these main characters meet an organization, group, or random people and fight along them. Although, why not by themselves? The reason is that knowing the presence of other people has a realistically less difficulty than being a lone wolf.…

The poster of North by Northwest (1959) depicts one of the surprising twists in the film’s plot: the apparent shooting of Cary Grant by his co-star Eva Marie Saint. The poster also uses Hitchcock’s name as a selling point by placing it above the title, a form of billing that was granted to only a few top directors (Adair 118). It was an added privilege. As in Rear Window the light touch that makes North by Northwest so entertaining disguises deeper concerns.…

As I have grounded my thesis on Hitchcock’s oeuvre within the matrix of 1950s America, the films that fall within the purview of my thesis include: Strangers on a Train (1951), Dial M for Murder (1954), Rear Window (1954), The Trouble with Harry (1955), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), The Wrong Man (1956), Vertigo (1958), North by Northwest (1959), Psycho (1960) and The Birds (1963). For the sake of comparison and to support my arguments I have made references to other prominent films of Hitchcock. My study also proposes to analyze how Alfred Hitchcock positions the culture of America in the 1950s in his films, how he represents the middle-class society, ideology and culture of America. It also aims to bring out how cultural studies can be applied to understand the Hitchcockian movies of the 1950s and Hitchcock’s ability to manipulate his…

The film Hearts and Minds is a documentary made by Peter Davis in 1974 to portray America’s unethical involvement in Vietnam and examine the opinions of many by showing interviews and vivid footages. The film focuses more on those who were against the war than those who supported it. For the U.S. all that mattered was the victory. However, those who were opposed to the war felt that there was no right or reasonable justification for their actions. The real issue illustrated by the film was whether the U.S. wanted to protect the country from communism or to manifest its greatest power in the world by winning another war.…
