Plot Twist In The Lottery By Edgar Allen Poe

Plot twist: a plot twist is a technique used by authors who try to convey a sudden turn of events. This element is popular in novels, poems, television shows and movies. It can happen in any type of literature since all the literary technique needs to occur is a plot. Here, the plot consists of a man going to a funeral, but in the last sentences, the audience learns he is at his own funeral, which is unexpected. The whole story is built up to be something that the reader thinks it should be, then with the plot twist derails what the reader thinks will happen, into something else. Aside from being famously used in “The Lottery”, Edgar Allen Poe uses the plot twist in “The Purloined Letter”. The short story makes the reader aware there is an …show more content…
This technique is used by the author to suggest something in the future that will happen. In a way, it is a warning that the reader will understand once the event that was being “warned” has already occurred. The author will give subtle hints to “tease” the reader about a plot twist that will happen later. Foreshadowing is most used in fiction, for example in “The Cask of Amontillado” by Poe. The narrator hints at the fate of his “friend” by explaining what a shame it would be if his friend were to die. When rereading the story, it is easier to pick up on foreshadowing since you know the plot twist already. The reader will know this relates to the plot twist being that the wake is for him; therefor it makes sense that everyone would know him. The reader might wonder “why would everyone know Jacob?” and later in the story, they would find out why he would be so well known at the wake. Foreshadowing was used in the first part of the story where Jacob gets a headache on the left side of his head. Later, the audience realizes this is because he shot himself on the left side of his …show more content…
Particularly, 3rd person point of view does not follow just one person, but gets an overview of everyone. This point of view leaves the audience in question about what the characters are thinking and usually will involve a plot twist. In “The Lottery” the POV is third person omniscient, meaning the narrator is detached from the story and does not know the character’s thoughts-one of the best decisions made by the author. It is best we cannot hear character’s thoughts so the reader is unaware of the anxious and paranoid thoughts that each character is having while drawing a possible ticket to death. I used third person point of view here so the audience is unaware that the main character is ironically going to his own wake. Inside Jacobs head, he is aware the wake he is going to is his own, but the audience is left to question it. Aside from stories read in class, “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant shows the same point of view. It was important to use third person in this because there could be no judging each character’s actions when they make an unfavorable decision. Although 3rd person POV has strengths and weaknesses, it was a successful literary technique used in “The Lottery” as well as my

The dominant theme is traditional. There is many evidence that it is traditional for example the villagers would not change the black box from years ago. In this story the villagers didn't want to change. Jackson makes this point through the use of symbolism through the townspeople’s names. Jackson draws attention to certain characters and their names, such as stating that Delacroix is pronounced “Dellacroy.” Delacroix is French for of the cross and references Jesus dying on the cross. A Possible Escape Artist: “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce In the short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce, the author utilizes “tricks” to the reader’s mind in order to maintain foreshadowing and portray what the average human mind endures before he or she dies. The reader is given clues throughout the story that point to the imagination of what Mr. Farquhar wants to happen before he is dropped to his death. First of all, what is up with the title? Someone is about to be executed for a crime, and the word occurrence is just too casual.…

The short story, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” by Ambrose Bierce, is a very suspenseful story about a man who is to be executed for war crimes. There are many literary devices that contribute to the creation of suspense that foreshadow the end of this story, three of which will be reviewed. One of the literary devices that pertain to suspense is irony, this device is found all over the story, and in some cases, difficult to find. Imagery is also a key term for suspense in this story, because it gives the reader something to really think about, and question, they would question the purpose of certain objects or scenes. The sequences that are shown in the elements of plot are what transformed the terms into a suspenseful story.…

“The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson describes a village that follows a tradition that is inhumane without a question because it is their tradition that has been passed down for many generations. One of the literary critic said, “…it describes man’s victimization by… ‘unexamined and unchanging traditions which he could easily change if he only realized their implications.’ ” In the story, the lottery takes place every single year with the head of the family drawing a paper and one of the family member in that family is killed by the villagers. This tradition or ritual has been practiced since the creation of the village. The theme of the story is that people follow the tradition or ritual blindly just because it has been practiced for a long period of time whether or not it is the right thing to do.…

In the literary work "The Lottery” the author Shirley Jackson describes a tale that is shocking, inhumane, and disturbing. When it originally was released in the year of 1948 it is noted that she received hundreds of letters, but only thirteen spoke kindly to her (Shirley Jackson, 63-67). People of that time period did not know the meaning of the story and it frightened them. But even more disturbing, I believe, Jackson wanted emphasize the fact of the social evils that still exist in modern society right in front of the public 's eyes with nothing being done about it.…

Another use of foreshadowing is when the townspeople talk of the putrid smell coming from Emily’s house. They ignore this smell and blame it on rodents. However, if the story were read from back to front, readers would know this smell is a result of the dead body rotting in Emily’s house. Through the use of these literary devices, Faulkner is able to draw more closely to the reader’s…

William Sydney porter otherwise known as ‘O. Henry uses ‘surprise ending’ or the ‘twist in the tail’’ (Arun, Peruvalluti) he was the original twist writer and still is an inspiration today. Tale twister stories are the most enduring kind of narrative because the form relies on one thing, the reader’s belief that when that which was hidden is revealed, he/she will be given, order, shape and meaning to the narrative. But they are also effective because they make the reader feel like they have control.…

Writers use point of view to create a certain feeling for their readers. They can use any of the four points of view to either capture their reader’s attention or to make the ending of their story more of a surprise to the readers. In Ernest Hemingway’s A Clean, Well-Lighted Place, there is an old man and two waiters, a younger and older waiter, in a cafe. The old man is deaf, so when the old man wants to drink more brandy, the young waiter kicks him out and the older waiter questions him about it. Later on the older waiter goes to a bar.…
