The story took place in New England of Salem. A group of girls went into the woods with a black slave woman named tituba,while dancing they were caught by the minister, Reverend Parris. One of the girls parris daughter, betty falls into a coma like state. A crowd gathers in parris home and as he tries to calm them down they sent for reverend hale, a witchcraft expert. Parris ask his niece abigail williams the ring leader about the things that happened in the woods. She admitted to nothing but dancing. as parris went to simmer the crowd down, abigail talks to some of the girls telling them not to confess to anything. John proctor a local farmer then talks to abigail alone, without anyone in the town knowing. Abigail and john had an affair a year ago (in their time). Abigail doesn't like john's wife elizabeth, she still loves him but john rejects her and tells her stop all the nonsense she has going on with the girls. Betty then wakes up but screaming. Some of the crowds run upstairs trying to figure out if she is bewitched. An argument breaks out between proctor, parris, the argumentative giles corey and the wealthy thomas putnam,the argument was about money and land deeds. Hale lost faith in the court, he begs the people who were accused witches to confess falsely to save their lives but they rejected. Danforth came up with an idea, he asked elizabeth to talk to john to confess and sign a paper and they’ll get to live and go home the very next day. She spoke with john and he agreed but he didn’t want to wrongly accused of something he never was or didn’t do but when the judges told him it was gonna be public john got angry and ripped the paper. Hale tried to convince danforth to spare them their lives, he ignored him and the witch trial came to a horrible end with ended with the two wives of giles corey and francis nurse and john
