In the first quarter I was given the role of Discussion Director where I was able to discuss questions with my group members that popped into my head while I was reading the book. As a group we were able to learn more by conversing with one another about our opinions and thoughts towards the book. It was interesting to hear other points of view on statements that I originally didn’t pay much attention to or think about in detail. The second quarter I was the Connector. We read about Nicolas talking with his sister about his court date regarding visiting hours with his son. I was able to connect this quarter to an article about a new bill that is currently being developed in Cyprus that deals with equal child custody between two divorced parents. My group and I learned about the challenges that Nicolas was facing as we saw his situation come to life in this article. For the third quarter I was the Researcher where I was able to look up a couple of articles dealing with Quebec’s history. We learned about Separatists and the significance of a rose. I also did research on the history of Samuel de Champlain’s wife and how she supposedly cursed love in Montreal. For the final quarter I was the illustrator. I drew a picture of Nicolas and Noushcka being reconnected as they walked to Raphael’s funeral. We all learned about the importance of this scene and the events it led to. Overall, the quality of my work was well done and I was happy with the majority of my findings. With having such a small group we were all able to contribute and learn something from each other which helped us to succeed as a Lit Circle

The Running Man by Michael Bauer demonstrates the experiences of marginalising and ‘putting people in boxes’ through the lives of multiple characters in the book. The characters that interpret this idea effectively are Tom Leyton and Joseph Davidson. An outsider is an individual that is often misunderstood, and are considered misfits that are excluded and experience isolation. They are faced with prejudice and the harsh judgement and negative perception from the community. In this novel, Michael Bauer traverses these ideas through his use of characterisation, narrative elements/structure, as well as key imagery and the use of motifs.…

Historical Fiction: Chickadee I have chosen the novel Chickadee by Louise Erdrich for the exploration assignment to address what the historical novel is able to accomplish that a conventional text of the same subject could not. Chickadee is the continuation of a story and fourth book in a series by Erdrich that began with the novel The Birchbark House that introduced a seven-year-old Ojibwe girl named Omakayas. Chickadee takes place in mid-1800 Minnesota and picks up the story with Omakayas eight-year-old twin boys, the quiet Chickadee and the mischievous Makoons. I really liked this class overall. I liked the creative project at the end of semester, it would be neat to have other assignments like that. I liked reading the Neil Gaiman works, but I think this class would benefit from studying other “popular” authors who deal with real-world themes. I really liked reading The Sandman and The Wolves in the Walls and finding merit in works like graphic novels and children’s books. I think that reading some of those works would be greatly beneficial for next year’s class.…
