Nineteen-year-old Nicolas and Noushcka Tremblay find themselves having to go through life without the support of their parents. Ever since they were young, their mother was never around to raise them. This has left them in the incapable hands of their father Etienne, a famous Quebecois folk singer who ended up in jail. In the first quarter I was given the role of Discussion Director where I was able to discuss questions with my group members that popped into my head while I was reading the book. As a group we were able to learn more by conversing with one another about our opinions and thoughts towards the book. It was interesting to hear other points of view on statements that I originally didn’t pay much attention to or think about in detail. The second quarter I was the Connector. We read about Nicolas talking with his sister about his court date regarding visiting hours with his son. I was able to connect this quarter to an article about a new bill that is currently being developed in Cyprus that deals with equal child custody between two divorced parents. My group and I learned about the challenges that Nicolas was facing as we saw his situation come to life in this article. For the third quarter I was the Researcher where I was able to look up a couple of articles dealing with Quebec’s history. We learned about Separatists and the significance of a rose. I also did research on the history of Samuel de Champlain’s wife and how she supposedly cursed love in Montreal. For the final quarter I was the illustrator. I drew a picture of Nicolas and Noushcka being reconnected as they walked to Raphael’s funeral. We all learned about the importance of this scene and the events it led to. Overall, the quality of my work was well done and I was happy with the majority of my findings. With having such a small group we were all able to contribute and learn something from each other which helped us to succeed as a Lit Circle
